Author Spotlight: Solease M. Barner: Secrets of the Ghosts–The Sleeper

SOLEASE M. BARNER

Solease has used writing as an outlet since grade school. While at the University of Michigan she was forced to take literary classes and her love for writing increased even more. Solease graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelors in Sociology. She then went on to graduate from Kaplan University with a Master’s in Criminal Justice. During her time in higher education she continued to write with a deeper passion for writing. Her career passion is Criminal Justice, but her first love is writing poetry and short stories. This love lead her to write her first novel ‘The Sleeper’, the first book in the Secrets of the Ghosts trilogy.

Tell us a little about your book.
This story is fiction with fantasy, action and romance all in one book. The Main character Holiday lives a covert life in Novi, MI. She is married with a child. She and her adopted sisters all live this life of ghosts. Holiday is the one who does things different than her sisters. When a close family member jeopardizes her family she truly loves she sends for help. Holiday life becomes more complex when an ex-lover comes back into her life and also brings in old feelings she thought was dead. If things could not get more complex Holiday learns she has a very special powerful gift that could help change her life and save her family.
How did you come up with the title?
The title was chosen based on the book. After the book was nearly completed, the characters in the book have all these secrets and they work in a secret agency that they are referred to as ghosts because no one knows they exist. The sleeper is another secret that you have to read to understand why that name came about.
What’s your favorite part of the writing process?
I have always enjoyed writing but, it was mostly poems and short stories. I enjoy writing novels because my imagination can be unleashed. I love to get in a quiet place no phones, no people just me my characters and my music. I have a great time writing it is the best part of being a writer to me
What was the biggest challenge you faced writing this book and how did you overcome it?
The biggest challenge I had writing this book was being on dialysis. When this book came in my head I was very ill and my way to cope was to write. It is very hard to write when you are sick.  I found strength in writing and this story got me through a lot of brutal days. The joy I felt writing this story helped me overcome the pain I was feeling. The characters kept me entertained and I almost forgot I was sick. If you were wondering I am no longer sick and my sister gave me a kidney transplant.
How long did it take to write your latest release?
I had a lot of time on my hands but I completed the book in six months. I was really into this book and found I could not stop writing. That is where all my free time went, writing Secrets of the Ghosts-The Sleeper.
Do you have a favorite line or scene from your latest release?
I have a few favorite lines but, I will just give one and that is Holiday says “I was always told don’t invite lions to the table or someone will get eaten. I am a Lion” I thought her saying that told exactly who she was and what she is capable of.
What have you learned during your self-publishing journey?
I have learned that self-publishing teaches you a lot. I have found myself learning promotional ideals and avenues I would have never thought about. It also has shown me that it is truly hard work. If people think being a self published author is easy then they are wrong. You are not only promoting your book yourself, there is also the thing people forget writers never stop writing so, I can say writing book two and three has been challenging but, I am enjoying every minute.
How are readers/reviewers reacting to your book?
I have been getting great responses from my book. I guess people like six beautiful women living covert lives and keeping secrets. The readers and reviewers so far are all ready for book two. I have received nothing but, good feedback…so far. We will see I know everyone will not like the book but, if I had to dream I would like everyone to enjoy this story as much as I do.
Tell us your latest news.
I am currently working on book two and three and I am not sure of the title for book two but, I do like Secrets of the Ghosts–Bloodlines Awakens. I have not committed to this title but it is a strong contender.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I would like readers to know that I hope they enjoy the book and their thoughts on the book are important to me. I do like to hear from readers and I will try to answer questions about the book without giving away too much in Book Two. I also want readers to know I am a reader and I write things that I will enjoy reading myself.
I would like to say thank you for the opportunity to share my book and my story. I am deeply thankful and very pleased that the support I was given. Thank You
